Ideas Wall

Welcome to our Ideas Wall. The Wall displays thoughts and ideas about how Cheney School and its Rumble Museum can develop environmentally, culturally, ethically, socially, and in many other ways over the next 30 years. Please send any ideas you have to lro@cheney.oxon.sch.uk and we will put those up on the Wall right away. Ideas can be a few words or a longer description – any length is fine. We will display all ideas anonymously unless you request your name to appear.

How can Cheney’s community thrive?

Idea

We could have boards around schooling informing people on what the school already does; for example solar panels, I didn’t know how many we actually had.

Idea

Futuristic Classrooms and Virtual Reality History lessons

Idea

The Rumble Museum could collect things like protest signs and stories from people

Idea

I have some ideas for the ideas wall, maybe we could have more awareness days for LGBTQ+ as well as LGBTQ+ history month lessons and workshops to help people understand matters around equality and the rights in the Uk and how not everyone necessarily has them. It would be cool to add pride flags around the school too 🙂

Idea

Cheney could host a repair cafe for students to help them gain practical life skills and reduce waste

Idea

Can we make more use of lighting in Assembly Hall to engage in assemblies of different kinds?

Idea

More sensory experiences in learning (like Story Museum)

Idea

In response to the section about how the Cheney community can thrive we could have a dedicated area where people can write about their experiences with topics such as LGBTQ+ and BLM amongst other things. This would lead to others learning about other people as well as highlighting and making people aware of the issues regarding certain topics that still exist today.

Idea

Encouraging a weekly club, where the older years dedicate half an hour to teach a group about a part of their culture, be it art, food, music or customs. This is an opt in- opt out club where any culture, faith, Gender or sexuality can just sit and listen to one another and expect to be allowed to speak and teach about their experiences and identity.

Idea

If the walls/classroom could talk..?

Idea

Encourage students to spend more time outdoors, perhaps by increasing time outside during PE lessons.

How can Cheney thrive within its natural habitat?

Idea

Wildlife preservation stations and pollution tanks

Idea

Some countries in Europe pay money for recycling machines. If we set a few of those up then the areas would have greater protection, and residents would have more motivation to actually contribute to the process of cleaning up the parks

Idea

plant more trees

Idea

Cheney can thrive through natural habitat by helping and keeping living things safe. You can do this by setting up night security for the habitats which can cause them harm as they have someone to help them
and by less pollution and less waste. Recycle and re-use old products

Idea

Scooters and bikes for all…where have all those bikes gone we had a couple of years ago?

Idea

We should grow fruit and vegetables on our rooftops, and have more wild meadow type areas within school site.

Idea

Allotment(growing own herbs)
Healthier and fresher canteen food

.

Idea

Wildlife corridors and living walls

.

Idea

  • Put up bird houses and more habitats for wild animals to thrive in such as hedgehog boxes – this could also be a good experiment for lower-school biology lessons.
  • Implement more green spaces such as the grass on W-block playground.
  • Have more water sources available for birds.

.

Idea

Naturehood talked about verges. Suggest students find who is responsible for the Warneford Lane avenue and see if they can lobby for it to become a wildlife verge, and contribute to developing it.

Extend the native hedge along the fence between the school site and the playing field

Select an area somewhere on the school site and allow brambles to grow

Ensure all fences have hedgehog holes

When we have our next tree safety inspection, ensure that any branches removed are kept on site to decay.

.

Idea

responsibilities within school that also help with the biodiversity/sustainability around cheney and they get given vouchers after 1hrs work etc which allow them to get a free meal

Idea

Create more wildlife areas around school, and teach students about how to care for them.

How can Cheney respect the health of the whole planet?

Idea

Cheney can help respect the health of the planet by taking action on sustainability

Idea

Turn waste into something useful that can contribute to society further.

Idea

Much less waste in the school canteen. Ask people to bring their own dishes in, or have washable dishes. Only have food on sale which has minimal wrappers etc.

Idea

Would it be more environmentally friendly and cheaper to redesign and refurbish W block in ten years time, rather than to knock it down and replace it?

Idea

Ideas for a more sustainable/environmentally friendly canteen, with the meals becoming slightly more expensive, but being fresher and healthier-sourced from local farmers-who get paid equally. For families who don’t qualify for pupil premium and yet find the new prices in the canteen too expensive a possible option may be:

Allocate responsibilities within school that also help with the biodiversity/sustainability-such as volunteering for gardening, wildlife care- and they get given vouchers after 1hrs work etc which allow them to get a free meal/meal deal voucher in the canteen.

Idea

I Believe that one way Cheney can serve the whole planet is to set up a Clean Up Group. Afterschool, Volunteers can go and clean a section of woodland, gaining volunteer points for DofE and also for Sixth Form CVs. This will allow kids to enjoy the outside, become part of the direct action to preserve nature and allow them to be represented by the work they pursue in helping out

Idea

Offer more plant-based meals in the canteen.

Idea

more environmentally friendly food in the canteen, lessons teaching about climate change, climate change march, cycling scheme – students get a free bike to cycle to school which is affordable and better for the planet.

Idea

Have free food available e.g. apples in autumn from Cheney grown apple trees

Idea

Using paper from old books

Idea

Fixing furniture – buying types that can be repaired

Idea

When Chadwick is refurbished we should make sure:
Solar panels on the roof
Well insulated so little heating is needed
Better ventilation
Shading and air flow for hotter times of year

Idea

Make information about how much of the schools electricity is renewable more accessible.

How can Cheney respect the wellbeing of all people?

Idea

Based on the project cece presentation, I feel that we ought to look at the sustainability and the ethical production of our school uniforms. Currently there is no clear disclosure of the way the uniforms are produced on the website of the uniform providers we use.

Idea

Have a system where any food that isn’t eaten is given to people who can’t afford it

Idea

Cheney can help respect the well being of all people by understanding what they did wrong and how it impacts can  others around the world

Idea

Host talks or events which discuss mental health in a positive light, to bring awareness of its stigma and how we can stop viewing mental health in that way.

Idea

To promote travel by bike throughout the entirety of Oxford (improve infrastructure etc) it improves personal health through exercise, as well as reducing emissions also it costs less than other modes of transport. So a lot of aspects of society can be improved by cycling.

Linking to a global stage in Africa, for example, people work towards getting a bike to improve their day to day lifestyle – if cycling becomes more popular in the western world it will likely increase the amount of schemes towards getting bikes to those in developing countries, and increasing their social quota

Idea

I think that if you would be able to make some steps towards more sustainable school uniforms you can make a huge impact as a school.

Idea

One of the workshops talked about Cheney having a future library and council of students whose job was to think about people in the future. Could Cheney have those? Also we could put objects into our school museum for future people?

Idea

More talks and debates on themes such as LGBTQ+ and BLM in tutor times
